Philippe Le Failler (born Briançon 1963) is a Lecturer specializing in the History of Modern and Contemporary Vietnam at the French School of the Far East (EFEO) and Aix-Marseille University. Currently based at EFEO Headquarters in Paris, he holds a research supervision qualification (2016) and has been an active member of IRASIA since 2012. His academic career demonstrates progression from contract researcher at EFEO (2000) to lecturer (2003), with ongoing scholarly contributions to Vietnamese historical studies.
Le Failler's educational background includes history studies at the University of Provence, where he completed his 1993 doctoral thesis on 'The international anti-opium movement and Indochina, 1906-1940' under Jean-Louis Miège and Charles Fourniau. His academic journey continued with a visiting fellowship at the Australian National University (1994-1996) before establishing his long-term collaboration with EFEO in Hanoi (1996).
His research trajectory demonstrates significant evolution from initial focus on colonial opium monopolies to broader investigations of Vietnam's political, social, and geographical margins. Current work analyzes capital-border area relations to define inter-ethnic evolution over three centuries, with notable publications on the Black River basin integration and Sapa district petroglyphs. His scholarly approach combines imperial monographs with colonial archives to examine peripheral region integration into the nation.
Le Failler has made substantial contributions to digital preservation of Vietnamese historical materials, creating digitized corpora of rare magazines published on CD-ROM. His publication record spans monographs, edited volumes, and digital reissues, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with history, archaeology, and cultural heritage. Since 2014, he has served on the editorial board of the journal Moussons (CNRS/IrAsia), becoming co-editorial director in 2016.
Professional activities include significant work with Vietnamese cultural institutions, particularly the cultural service of Lào Cai province on petroglyph documentation. His research methodology combines archival research with fieldwork in border regions, demonstrating commitment to both theoretical analysis and practical cultural preservation. Current scholarly focus centers on long-term historical processes of nation-building and ethnic integration in Vietnam.
