V. Venkataraja Sarma was a renowned Senior Sanskrit scholar associated with the Pondicherry Centre of the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) for 29 years until his retirement in 2016. Previously, he served as Principal of Tiruvananthapuram Sanskrit College. His expertise centered on Paninian Grammar, particularly through his collaboration on the Pāṇinīyodāharaṇakośa, a multivolume dictionary of examples illustrating Pāṇini’s grammatical rules. He contributed to the ANR project on 16th- and 17th-century Paninians and taught numerous researchers at EFEO.
His accolades include the President’s Award for Sanskrit (2005), Vacaspathi Puraskar (2013), and an honorary D. Litt. from Sree Sankaracharya University (2013). His work bridged traditional Sanskrit scholarship with modern linguistic analysis, leaving an enduring legacy in Indological studies.
