Andrew Hardy

Andrew Hardy is a Research Professor in the History department at the French School of the Far East (EFEO), based in Vietnam with primary affiliation to the Southeast Asia Center. Authorized to direct research, he supervises doctoral candidates including Antoine Lê, who defended his thesis on South Vietnam's revolutionary state apparatus in May 2024 under Hardy's co-direction.

Hardy's research centers on Vietnamese and Southeast Asian historical dynamics, with deep expertise in ethnic groups (Champa, Khmers, Hrê), pre-modern trade networks, migration patterns, and state formation processes. His interdisciplinary methodology integrates historical, archaeological, and anthropological perspectives to analyze highland-lowland interactions, frontier conflicts, and cultural heritage documentation across centuries.

His publication record (2013-2023) reveals consistent focus on the Vietnamese Highlands, Champa civilization, and Southeast Asian integration frameworks. Key contributions examine archaeological territories, border security logics, and post-Champa economic systems, often through collaborative projects like SEATIDE which investigated inclusion/exclusion dynamics.

Hardy has supervised doctoral research while managing significant initiatives including the SEATIDE project (2014-2015) on Southeast Asian integration. His work frequently involves Vietnamese scholarly partnerships and bilingual publication outputs.
