Andrew Hardy is a Professor and Director of Studies at the École Française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in Paris, affiliated with the Centre Asie du Sud-Est (CASE/UMR 8170) and Doctoral School 286 of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). His research focuses on the history of migration, borderlands, and inter-ethnic relations in Vietnam, particularly in its central regions, alongside studies on Vietnamese imperial expansion and Champa-Vietnam interactions. He has led projects such as the study of the Quang Ngai Wall and coordinated EU-funded initiatives like SEATIDE (2012-2016) and CRISEA (2017-2021). His work integrates archaeological, historical, and anthropological perspectives, emphasizing cross-disciplinary collaboration with Vietnamese and European institutions.
Education includes a BA from the University of Cambridge (1987), MA and DEA from Université de Paris 7 (1991, 1993), and a PhD from the Australian National University (1999). His seminal work, Red Hills (2003), examines state-migrant dynamics in Vietnamese highlands. He has authored/co-authored numerous books and articles on Champa history, migration, and Southeast Asian studies.
Key projects include the multi-disciplinary Quang Ngai Wall study (since 2005) and the ANR-funded 'Cooliebrokers' project (2021-2024), exploring labor migration in French colonial contexts. His contributions span translations, edited volumes, and archaeological research, reflecting his commitment to bridging historical and contemporary regional challenges.
