Philip Snyder serves as a Lecturer in the Music Department at the University of North Georgia (UNG), where he teaches guitar, cello, aural skills, music appreciation, and orchestra. A classically trained guitarist and cellist, he is equally accomplished on both instruments and frequently demonstrates this rare dual-proficiency in live performances. He is a founding member of two nationally recognized chamber ensembles: the Georgia Guitar Quartet and Revien, both of which have toured extensively and been featured on National Public Radio's "Performance Today".
Dr. Snyder's educational background includes:
- Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Guitar Performance, University of Georgia (2003)
- Master of Music (M.M.) in Guitar Performance, University of Georgia (2000)
- Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Guitar Performance, University of Georgia (1998)
His research and creative scholarship centers on expanding guitar repertoire through composition and arranging, with significant contributions transcribing works by Arvo Pärt, Chopin, Bach, Vivaldi, and Ginastera for guitar ensembles. His arrangements have been published by Les Productions d’Oz, and he has contributed scholarly analysis of Ginastera's transcribable works in Soundboard Magazine.
Analysis of Dr. Snyder's publication record reveals a consistent focus on bridging classical composition traditions with guitar performance practice. His work demonstrates a specialized trend in adapting 19th-20th century European and Latin American classical works for guitar quartet format, emphasizing repertoire development for underrepresented ensemble configurations while maintaining scholarly rigor in transcription methodology.
As a core member of the Georgia Guitar Quartet and Revien, Dr. Snyder has released multiple critically acclaimed recordings including "GGQ/Sims" (2009), "Puzzle" (2007), and "Dama" (2015). These albums showcase his dual-instrument mastery (guitar and cello) and have received recognition from Soundboard Magazine for their artistic interpretation and technical excellence in chamber music performance.
