Philip Rathgeb is a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. Previously a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Konstanz, he holds a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute and has held visiting positions at Harvard University, Lund University, and the University of Southern Denmark.
His research focuses on comparative political economy and comparative politics, with expertise in welfare states, industrial relations, trade unions, radical right parties, and the intersection of capitalism and democracy. Current projects include analyzing the political economy of eco-social policies and radical right impacts on welfare systems, supported by a German Research Foundation (DFG) grant.

His seminal work includes the 2024 Oxford University Press book How the Radical Right Has Changed Capitalism and Welfare in Europe and the USA, which examines how nativist and authoritarian ideologies reshape economic and social policies. Publications appear in journals like Socio-Economic Review, Journal of European Public Policy, and West European Politics.
Scientific awards include the Kurt W. Rothschild Award, Theodor Körner Prize, Austrian Chamber of Labour's Science and Innovation Awards, and the Richard Titmuss Book Award. He co-chairs Edinburgh's Work, Economy, and Welfare research group and the Virtual ESPAnet Workshop.
