Dr. Philip Owens is Professor and Research Chair in Landscape Ecology at the University of Northern British Columbia. His research investigates landscape disturbances (forestry, mining, wildfires) on sediment/contaminant transport using environmental tracers. Current projects include sediment fingerprinting, wildfire impact assessments, and watershed resiliency studies.
Research focuses on:
- Sediment source identification and transport mechanisms
- Post-wildfire contaminant dynamics
- Watershed-scale sediment budgeting
- Environmental fallout radionuclide applications
He leads multiple collaborative projects including Nechako Watershed research and Mount Polley mine spill impact studies. Teaches courses in Northern Contaminated Environments and Drainage Basin Geomorphology.
