Philip Noah is a Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University’s Alpert Medical School. He serves as the founding Section Chief of Psychiatric Neuromodulation at VA Providence and as Lead for Mental Health Research & Associate Director for Training and Research Partnerships at the VA Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology.
- Education: BSc from McGill University, MD from Albany Medical College (AOA, Biomedical Ethics Distinction)
His research focuses on precision neuromodulation technologies for treating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, and suicidality. Key projects include NIMH-funded human trials of MRI-guided low-intensity focused ultrasound and studies on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for PTSD. His work bridges clinical trials, neuroimaging, and biomechanical modeling to optimize stimulation targeting.
Recent publications highlight his integration of machine learning, functional connectivity analysis, and biostatistical modeling to predict TMS outcomes. Collaborations span institutions like Butler Hospital, VA Providence, and industry partners in neuroengineering.
- Scientific Awards: Distinguished Investigator Award (2024), Purple Merit Star (2023), Society of Biological Psychiatry honors, and multiple research fellowships.
He mentors psychiatry residents and leads the NIMH R25 psychiatry resident research training program, emphasizing interdisciplinary training and translational research.
