Philip Manow is a Professor of International Political Economy at the University of Siegen since April 2024. Previously, he held a professorship in Comparative Political Economy at the University of Bremen (2010–2024) and is a member of the Social Science Class of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (since 2018). He leads subproject C07 "Between the People and Forsa" in the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) and contributes to AG6, AG8, and FW6 projects.
Research Interests: His work focuses on the political economy of populism, constitutionalization of democracy, electoral systems, and democratic regression. He critiques the juristification of political processes and the rise of populism as a symptom of democratic deficits.
Publications: Manow's recent works analyze the paradoxes of liberal democracy, the role of constitutional courts, and the self-monitoring of democracy through polling. His 2024 book Under Observation: The Determination of Liberal Democracy and Its Friends argues that post-1989/90 constitutionalization threatens political sovereignty, linking this to populist backlash.
Advising and Grants: While specific students or grants aren't listed, Manow's collaborative work with scholars like Veith Selk and Uwe Volkmann, and engagements with institutions such as the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, highlight his interdisciplinary impact.
