Philip Lea serves as a Teaching Fellow in Law at the University of Portsmouth's School of Civil Engineering and Surveying (Faculty of Technology), instructing tort law and contract law for first-year surveying and civil engineering students. His transition from litigation solicitor specializing in professional negligence directly informs his academic approach.
His research and teaching concentrate on legal frameworks critical to engineering disciplines, including Tort Law, Contract Law, Professional Negligence, and Construction Law. Practical litigation experience enables applied pedagogy focused on risk mitigation and liability in built-environment contexts.
Outside academia, Lea co-founded multiple disability-focused charities as Trustee and Director while serving as a retained Firefighter with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, demonstrating significant community engagement beyond teaching responsibilities.
