Philip Harfield is a Senior Lecturer in Design Thinking and Innovation and serves as the MA Design Innovation Course Leader at the Faculty of Business and Creative Industries, Nottingham Trent University. He is an active member of the Creative Industries Research and Innovation Group, focusing on design-driven approaches to sustainability and innovation.
His research interests center on design-led innovation for sustainable development, with key areas including eco-innovation, ecodesign, design thinking, and resource management. His work contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in environmental sustainability and responsible innovation. He has led impactful projects such as cycLED under the European Commission’s FP7 programme, developing methods to reduce critical raw material use in lighting, and initiated the Mapping Critical Resources Wales (MCRW) project to address future resource challenges in Wales.
At Nottingham Trent University, he managed the ‘Future Factory’, a £1.9M ERDF-funded Sustainable Design Centre, where he led initiatives to build sustainable design capacity among regional businesses. His industry experience includes running a successful design and manufacturing studio for seven years, enriching his academic work with practical insights. His expertise spans multidisciplinary concept prototyping, product development, and sustainable business innovation.
He advocates for collaboratively designed, human-centered, and technology-enabled solutions to shared societal and environmental challenges. His teaching and research integrate creative design practice with real-world applications in sustainability.
