Professor Philip Goff is a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy at Durham University, specializing in the philosophy of mind and consciousness studies. His work bridges philosophical inquiry with scientific understanding of consciousness, offering novel perspectives on age-old questions about the nature of reality.
Professor Goff's primary research interest centers on the relationship between consciousness and our overall theory of reality. He challenges traditional approaches of physicalism and dualism, arguing they face insurmountable difficulties. Instead, he defends panpsychism—the view that consciousness is a fundamental and ubiquitous feature of the physical world. His recent book "Why? The Purpose of the Universe" (2023) explores whether panpsychism can offer a middle way between traditional belief in God and secular atheism. He has also authored "Galileo's Error: Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness" (2019) for general audiences and "Consciousness and Fundamental Reality" (2017) for academic philosophers. Additionally, he co-edited "Is Consciousness Everywhere? Essays on Panpsychism," featuring contributions from prominent scientists and thinkers including Carlo Rovelli, Sean Carroll, Lee Smolin, Annaka Harris, Christof Koch, and Anil Seth.
His scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on consciousness, panpsychism, and the mind-body problem, with recent work expanding into cosmological implications of his views. His publications span academic journals, edited collections, and books for both scholarly and general audiences, reflecting his commitment to making complex philosophical ideas accessible.
Professor Goff supervises graduate students including Eleena Takashima and Gaurav Kudtarkar, contributing to the next generation of philosophical thinkers in consciousness studies. His work has generated significant interdisciplinary dialogue, engaging with scientists, philosophers, and spiritual thinkers across multiple fields.
