Philip E. Bourne is the Stephenson Chair of Data Science and Director of the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia, where he also holds a Professorship in Biomedical Engineering. He previously served as Associate Director for Data Science at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and held academic roles at UC San Diego, Columbia University, and the University of Sheffield. Bourne earned his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Flinders University in 1979.
His research spans structural bioinformatics, computational biology, and scholarly communication. Key contributions include co-developing the Combinatorial Extension algorithm, co-founding SciVee, and leading the Protein Data Bank (PDB) initiative. He is a Fellow of the AAAS and ISCB, and has received awards such as the Jim Gray e-Science Award (2010) and the Benjamin Franklin Award (2009).
Bourne advocates for open science, co-authoring influential works on FAIR data principles and promoting preprints. His work bridges computational methods, drug discovery, and data science, with a focus on advancing biomedical research through interdisciplinary collaboration.
His research teams and labs focus on structural proteomics, drug repurposing, and AI-driven insights in biological data. He has advised numerous initiatives, including Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K), and contributed to over 300 peer-reviewed publications.
