Philip Burcham is an Associate Professor with joint appointments in the School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Allied Health at The University of Western Australia. He holds expertise in pharmacology and toxicology, focusing on novel therapeutic strategies against oxidant-induced cell damage. His research emphasizes acrolein's role in diseases like neurotrauma and pulmonary disorders. He contributed significantly to UWA's curriculum, including the 'Drugs that Changed the World' course.
Educational background includes a PhD in pharmacology from 1990, postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University's Center for Molecular Toxicology, and prior roles at the University of Adelaide. His work bridges academia and practical applications, including drug repurposing and carbonyl scavenger development.
Research interests include protein damage by reactive chemicals, toxicological consequences of drug metabolism, and lung injury from smoke. Key projects involve collaborations on acrolein toxicity mechanisms and pharmaceutical innovation. He has authored over 40 publications, including a textbook on toxicology.
Grants include funding from NHMRC, ARC, and industry partnerships, supporting studies on acrolein, lung injury, and drug delivery. His lab explores ex vivo perfusion systems and molecular mechanisms of toxin-induced damage.
