Philip Cooke is a Professor of Italian History and Culture at the University of Strathclyde’s School of Humanities. He holds administrative roles including Subject Leader in Italian and UoA co-ordinator for History. His research focuses on the Italian Resistance movement, 20th-century Italian history, and the history of medicine. He has also co-founded RESnet, an academic group studying Resistance representation in museums.
Education: PhD from University of Edinburgh (1994), MA in Italian (1988). His interdisciplinary teaching spans language, film, literature, and history, emphasizing the interplay between history and culture. He has supervised numerous PhD students on topics like the Italian Communist Party, Mafia, and Pasolini.
Recent projects include studies on the 1966 Florence flood’s socio-political impact and medical education in 19th-century Italy, supported by a Wellcome Trust Grant. He co-edited Modern Italy journal (2010–2015) and chairs the Association for the Study of Modern Italy (ASMI).
Key research areas include multilingualism, the history of science, and the political use of history in contemporary Italy. His work bridges historical analysis with cultural studies, addressing themes like memory, protest movements, and the circulation of ideas.
