Philip Cohen is an Adjunct Professor at Monash University's Faculty of Information Technology, Department of Data Science & AI. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Cornell University and M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on natural language processing, dialogue systems, multimodal interfaces (e.g., speech, gesture, AR/VR), and AI-driven applications in healthcare, robotics, and crisis management. Cohen leads the Laboratory for Dialogue Research, aiming to develop collaborative dialogue systems grounded in formal theories of intention and planning. He previously led AI R&D at Voicebox, developing conversational agents for automotive and mobile platforms.
Research Contributions: Cohen’s work spans dialogue theory, multi-agent systems, and human-robot interaction. His recent projects include the AIDE initiative (Ambulance Victoria collaboration) and the development of teachable robots. His publications explore adaptive dialog systems, reinforcement learning in robotics, and multimodal interface design.
Awards:
- Fellow of AAAI (1992)
- Influential Paper Award (2006)
- Sustained Accomplishment Award (2017)
Grants & Collaborations: Chief Investigator for the AIDE project (2020–2021), focusing on AI in cardiac arrest response. Collaborates internationally on dialogue systems and robotic interaction.
His current lab aims to become a global leader in dialogue research, employing up to 20 researchers to advance plan-based dialogue frameworks and collaborative AI systems.
