Dr Philip Catney is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and School Research Director at Keele University's School of Social Sciences. He joined Keele in 2007, previously holding research roles at the University of Sheffield and managing a £2 million EPSRC-funded brownfield regeneration consortium. His research focuses on urban governance, environmental policy, and sustainable development, with expertise in multi-level governance frameworks and energy transitions. He has led/co-investigated four major research council projects, including the ESRC-funded Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity.
Key research interests include: urban sustainability strategies, energy infrastructure in Global South cities, and the political economy of land use. He co-edits the Routledge 'Transforming Environmental Politics and Policy' series with Tim Doyle. His work spans policy analysis, public engagement, and collaborative research networks. Media contributions include commentary on local, regional, and national political issues.
Professional roles include membership in the Sustainable Development Commission’s panel and invited lectures for HM Treasury and CABE. Current projects explore net-zero governance challenges, hydrogen energy adoption, and climate praxis in universities. Supervision focuses on public management, political participation, and urban policy.
