Michael Grubb is Professor of Energy and Climate Change at University College London's Bartlett School of Environment, Energy & Resources, and Director of the UCL Centre for Net Zero Market Design. He combines academic research with applied roles in energy policy, including contributions to the UK Climate Change Committee, Ofgem, and international climate initiatives. His work focuses on energy systems, climate policy, and the economics of innovation-driven transitions. Grubb has held leadership positions at Chatham House, the Carbon Trust, and Cambridge University.
Research interests span energy economics, climate policy design, renewable systems integration, and international climate agreements. He co-leads the UK ESRC Rebuilding Macroeconomics programme’s Sustainability hub and contributed to the IPCC Sixth Assessment. His book Planetary Economics (2014) won the 2021 Marcel Boiteux Prize.
Key publications address electricity market reform, carbon pricing mechanisms, and the global political economy of energy transitions. Grubb’s recent analyses emphasize redesigning market frameworks to align with net-zero goals, particularly in the UK and EU. He advises on climate finance mechanisms, fossil fuel phase-out strategies, and equitable energy transition pathways.
