Dr. Byers' research examines the intersection of religious institutions and civic life in American history, with particular focus on Christian traditions, constitutional development, and philanthropic practices. His work reveals how faith-based actors shaped civil society through engagement with free markets and political culture, especially in postwar America.
His recent publications analyze philanthropic dynamics in mid-20th century religious communities, tracing connections between Hoosier patronage networks and Black Church interactions with foundation funding. These studies demonstrate consistent methodological approaches across religious history, political economy, and civil society studies.
Committed to undergraduate mentorship, Dr. Byers regularly engages students through informal coffee meetings while advising on historical research and civic participation.
