James P. McCartin is an Associate Professor in the Theology Department at Fordham University and a member of the Fordham Center on Religion and Culture. Previously, he served at Seton Hall University as part of the History Department, Center for Catholic Studies, and University Honors Program. He holds a PhD (2003) and MA (1999) from the University of Notre Dame and an AB (1996) from the College of the Holy Cross. His research focuses on U.S. Catholic history, American religious history, and the cultural history of spirituality. McCartin’s seminal work Prayers of the Faithful (Harvard UP, 2010) examines how American Catholics’ spiritual practices evolved alongside societal changes from the 1860s to 1980s. His ongoing project explores American Catholics and sexuality from the 1830s to 1980s.
His publications include analyses of Catholic piety’s intersection with civil rights, war, and cultural shifts. McCartin teaches courses such as ‘Catholics in America’ and ‘Faith and Critical Reason.’
