Dr. Philip Booth is a Lecturer and Programme Leader for the Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences (HLSS) Foundation Year at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). He holds a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship and specializes in pilgrimage history, particularly Holy Land pilgrimage from medieval to contemporary contexts. His teaching focuses on Medieval history, including units on the War of the Roses and Pilgrimages and Shrines in Medieval Europe.
Dr. Booth’s research explores the evolution of pilgrimage forms, cultural interactions through religious travel, and the intersection of medieval and modern pilgrimage practices. Current projects include a monograph on Thietmar’s 13th-century Holy Land pilgrimage account, LDS (Mormon) pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Thomas Cook’s Palestine tours, and links between medieval and modern walking pilgrimages.
He has taught at Lancaster University, the University of Birmingham, and Nottingham Trent University before joining MMU in 2019. His supervision interests include medieval pilgrimage, travel, religion, cultural encounters, and medieval Jerusalem studies. He is based in the Geoffrey Manton Building and available for meetings on Wednesdays 10:00-15:00 by appointment.
