Megan Boomer

Megan Boomer serves as an Assistant Professor of Art and Visual Culture at Bates College, with an additional affiliation in the Classical and Medieval Studies program. Her office is located in Olin Arts Center, Room 314, and she can be reached at mboomer@bates.edu.

Her educational background includes:

• PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2019)
• Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Getty Research Institute
• Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia University

Her research centers on architectural history of the medieval Mediterranean, with a focus on how sacred spaces defined historical memories and communities. Key areas include the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem (1099-1187), Fatimid shrines in Egypt and Palestine, and the visual culture of Arabic-speaking Christian communities. She also examines twentieth-century representations of the crusades through her book project Reconstructing the Holy Land.

Professor Boomer advises senior theses in the Classical and Medieval Studies program and teaches courses such as The Art of Islam (AVC 241/CMS 241/REL 241) and Medieval Architecture (AVC 251/CMS 251/REL 253), exploring topics including pilgrimage, urban space, and global visual cultures of Islamic art.
