Dr. Philip Basford is a Senior Research Fellow in the Computational Engineering and Design Group at the University of Southampton. His work focuses on advancing medical imaging technologies and sensor networks. He contributed to the Foundations for routine 3D X-ray histology project and is part of the µ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre, managing IT infrastructure for complex datasets.
He holds a MEng in Computer Science from the University of Southampton and completed his PhD there on the Glacsweb project, developing glacier monitoring technologies. His research awards include the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for the 'Erica the Rhino' project, which used Raspberry Pi systems for interactive art installations.
Recent research explores IoT applications in environmental monitoring, edge computing with Raspberry Pi clusters, and archaeological imaging via the Geodesic RTI dome. His publications span biomedical imaging, coral morphology, and particulate matter sensing technologies.
External contributions include speaking engagements on Raspberry Pi clusters at FRµIT events (2018). His work bridges computational engineering with interdisciplinary applications in medicine, ecology, and forensics.
