معرفی
Philip Anglewicz is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is a leading expert in demographic change in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on family planning, contraceptive use, internal migration, HIV/AIDS, and survey methodology. He serves as Principal Investigator of the Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) project and is affiliated with the William H. Gates Sr. Institute for Population and Reproductive Health and the Hopkins Population Center.
Dr. Anglewicz holds a PhD and MA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from Indiana University. His research is deeply rooted in longitudinal and population-based studies, particularly in Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria. He has led and co-led major NIH-funded projects, including a longitudinal study on the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in rural Malawi since 1998.
His research interests span demographic dynamics, reproductive health, and methodological rigor in survey design. He emphasizes data quality, contraceptive empowerment, and health disparities. His work informs global family planning initiatives such as FP2030 and contributes to understanding pandemic responses through the lens of prior epidemic experiences.
The recent publications of Dr. Anglewicz reflect a strong trend in evaluating contraceptive use trends, data reliability in self-reported usage, unintended pregnancies, and the integration of family planning services in low-resource settings. His studies often employ advanced statistical methods and large-scale survey data from multiple African countries, highlighting cross-national comparisons and equity-focused analyses.
- Deputy Director, The William H. Gates Sr. Institute for Population and Reproductive Health (2020–present)
- William G. Robertson, Jr. Professorship in Population and Family Planning (2019–present)
- Faculty Associate, Hopkins Population Center (2019–present)
- Technical Resource Advisor, Performance Monitoring and Evidence Working Group (2019–present)
Dr. Anglewicz mentors students and collaborates extensively with in-country partners, funders, and global health organizations. He oversees technical operations in survey design, data management, and analysis for PMA. He also leads the PMA Program of Research, guiding research question development and capacity building in survey methodology. While specific student names are not listed, his leadership in large research teams implies significant advisory and training roles. He has not received traditional grants listed explicitly, but his work is funded by NIH and other major public health initiatives.
He leads and contributes to major research projects including the Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA), the Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health, and studies on the impact of Ebola and Hurricane Katrina on demographic outcomes. These projects involve interdisciplinary teams and long-term data collection efforts across multiple countries.
