Philip A. Haile is the Ford Foundation Professor of Economics at Yale University, where he has been since 2003. He holds a secondary appointment at the Yale School of Management and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). His research focuses on industrial organization, auctions, and empirical methods, with a particular emphasis on differentiated products markets. Haile earned his A.B. from Duke University (1988) and Ph.D. from Northwestern University (1996). He has held visiting positions at the University of Chicago and Stanford University.
He has served as Editor for the RAND Journal of Economics and on editorial boards of top journals including Econometrica and American Economic Journal-Microeconomics. His work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and others. Haile directed the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics (2005–2011) and remains affiliated with it. His honors include Fellowships from the Econometric Society and CEMMAP (UK).
Haile’s research explores demand estimation using microdata, auction design, and endogeneity in markets. Recent work addresses unobserved heterogeneity in oil lease auctions and structural identification in oligopoly models. His methods emphasize nonparametric approaches to address econometric challenges in industrial organization.
