Phil Watson is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Sunderland, having joined in February 2021. Previously, he spent ten years at Teesside University, where he led modules in undergraduate and postgraduate social work. He holds an MA in Community Work Studies from Durham University (1998) and has over three decades of professional experience in both statutory and voluntary sectors, focusing on community work, poverty, and environmental justice. His current roles include chairing the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle Justice and Peace Co-ordinating Council, supporting asylum seekers and Tyne and Wear Citizens, and volunteering with learning disability advocacy. He teaches the BA Working with Adults and Dissertation modules, and oversees the Higher Degree Apprenticeship End Point Assessment. His research interests span community development, social justice, and the intersection of spirituality with social work.
