Paul Innerd is a Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at the University of Sunderland's Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing. He is an accredited Clinical Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and holds an Honorary Clinical Research pass with the NHS. His work focuses on using digital health solutions to address the chronic disease pandemic, with particular emphasis on improving physical activity and sleep patterns.
His research interests span clinical exercise physiology, sleep medicine, eHealth, digital wearables, and IoT applications for health monitoring. He investigates how lifestyle factors affect the aging process, especially in older populations at high risk for disease and disability. His work also includes cancer research conducted at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research.
His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on physical activity measurement across different populations - from children to the elderly. His research shows particular innovation in using open-source analytics and digital platforms to assess health behaviors and develop preventive interventions for chronic diseases.
Dr. Innerd collaborates extensively with multiple NHS trusts including Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, and City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. He also works with Sunderland City Council and industry partners such as Activinsights and Apple.
He leads the Dissertation module and teaches across various courses from undergraduate to doctoral supervision. His teaching includes exercise physiology, clinical exercise physiology, sleep medicine, and digital health solutions. He has supervised students including Dr. Greg Robertson on research related to acute fractures in team sports.
