Phil Markowitz serves as a Professor in the Jazz Arts division at the Manhattan School of Music, where he instructs graduate and doctoral students in piano and small ensemble performance. With forty years of professional experience, he is a veteran of the international jazz scene as a pianist, composer, and bandleader.
His artistic research explores the full potential of improvisational music within jazz, spanning traditional to avant-garde styles. Markowitz is renowned for compositions ranging from hard-cutting chromaticism to lyrical post-romantic ballads, characterized by inventive harmonic structures and rhythmic sophistication. His work embodies a forward-looking vision that pushes contemporary jazz boundaries while honoring its roots.
His major accolades include:
- Grammy Award for 'Homage to Count Basie'
- Grammy nomination for 'Affinity' (featuring his composition 'Sno Peas')
Markowitz has secured research funding through multiple grants from The Howard Foundation, Chamber Music America-The Doris Duke Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The New York Foundation for the Arts. He maintains an active performance career as leader of his trio and quartet with violinist Zach Brock, and as pianist for the all-star ensemble 'Saxophone Summit' (David Liebman, Joe Lovano, Greg Osby, Billy Hart), which tours regularly in the US and Europe.
