Professor Phil Jones is a cultural geographer at the University of Birmingham's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, serving as Head of Admissions. He holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (2003), following MAs from the University of St Andrews (1998) and the University of Leicester (1999). His research focuses on urban regeneration, cycling, and arts-based methods, with a strong emphasis on innovative qualitative techniques like virtual reality, qualitative GIS, and mobile interviewing. His work explores embodiment (walking/cycling), urban development, and greenspace effects in prisons and post-apartheid South African planning contexts.
He leads the Playful Methods Lab, fostering collaboration among PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Key publications include A Research Agenda for Digital Geographies (2023) and Virtual Reality Methods (2022). Recent research highlights prison environmental quality’s impact on wellbeing and the role of planning in post-apartheid societies. Jones has secured £3.5 million for Creative Community projects and emphasizes student-centered teaching with high feedback scores.
His advising focuses on qualitative methods in embodiment studies, urban regeneration, and arts integration. Grants include funding for interdisciplinary urban initiatives. The Playful Methods Lab pioneers digital tools like wearables, biosensors, and touchtables, blending virtual and physical environments for geographical inquiry.
