Dr. Siân Butcher is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography & Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the School of Earth, Society & Environment and the Center for African Studies. Her research focuses on urban, economic, and development geography in Southern Africa, particularly examining developer-driven housing, race and real estate dynamics, and post-apartheid socio-spatial change in Johannesburg. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and prior academic roles include a lecturer position at the University of the Witwatersrand and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Gauteng City Region Observatory.
Her work employs qualitative methods to analyze financialization of housing, urban political economy, and the 'provincializing' of global urbanism. Courses taught include Global Development and Environment, Cities of the World, and qualitative research methods. She has contributed to interdisciplinary projects on South African urban governance and has published widely on topics such as housing markets, spatial inequality, and socio-economic change.
Dr. Butcher’s research emphasizes the intersection of property development practices and socio-spatial justice in unequal cities, with recent projects exploring affordable rental housing and alternatives to developer-driven urbanism. She collaborates across disciplines and institutions, reflecting her commitment to understanding urban challenges in the Global South through critical geographic frameworks.
