Phil Hughes is a Course Leader at Regent's University London, currently leading the BA (Hons) Film and Screen and BA (Hons) Screenwriting and Producing programs. He previously led the MA Writing for Stage and Screen program. His roles combine academic instruction with professional screenwriting expertise.
Education includes a PGCHE from Regent's (2016–2017), a BA in English Literature (2:1 Hons) from Westfield College, University of London (1980–1983), and ongoing PhD studies in Creative Writing at Lancaster University (2018).
Research and creative interests focus on screenwriting structure, narrative techniques, and creative pedagogy. His 2023 publication, Character is Structure, guides screenwriters in crafting compelling narratives. Professional credits include produced feature films like I Want Candy (2007) and Thunderpants (2002), alongside TV scripts for BBC’s Dusty and Musty and animated series Care Shorts.
A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Writers Guild of America, Hughes balances academic leadership with industry collaborations. His current projects include scripts for The Nest Egg and Psycho Mafia.
