Phil Hillson is a Lecturer in the School of Psychology, Sport and Sensory Science at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), based at the Writtle campus. His academic career began in 1986 in Essex education, starting as a PE Teacher at SEEVIC College where he pioneered GCSE and A Level Physical Education courses, shifting PE toward academic study. Following Writtle University College's merger with ARU, he continues developing professional and academic practice in higher education.
His qualifications include:
- Certificate in Education (with Qualified Teacher Status)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Education
- MSc in Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology from Staffordshire University
- Current PhD candidate in Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology at the University of Essex
Phil's research centers on sport psychology with emphasis on:
- Social identity leadership influences
- Perceived social support mechanisms
- Team identification and cohesion dynamics
- Impact of formal/informal leadership on team chemistry
- Social outcomes for sports players
He holds the distinction of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, awarded for teaching excellence and professional development. Scientific recognition focuses on this fellowship as his primary academic honor.
Phil combines academic work with extensive practical application as a Strength & Conditioning Coach in professional and semi-professional Rugby. His industry experience includes Senior Leadership Team roles in two schools and consultancy work for Essex County Council, enabling integration of psychological skills development within high-performance coaching environments. He teaches BSc Sport and Exercise Science and MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology courses while pursuing doctoral research.
