Phil Hancock is a Professor of Accounting and Director of Student Experience at the UWA Business School, The University of Western Australia. He joined UWA in 2002 after roles at Murdoch University and other institutions. His academic journey includes a BCom (Hons) and MCom from UWA, complemented by professional fellowships with CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ, and AFAANZ. A recognized educator, he has received multiple awards including the CPA WA Divisional President’s Award (2020) and Carrick Institute Citation (2006).
His research focuses on accounting education innovation, financial reporting standards (especially for Not-For-Profit entities), and the teaching-research nexus. Over his career, he has secured over $1.8M in research grants, leading projects on topics like assessment practices, accounting standards, and learning methodologies. Notable collaborations include studies with institutions across Australia, the UK, and South Africa.
Hancock has held senior administrative roles including Director of the University Credit Union and has advised organizations like Woodside Energy and the Department of Premier and Cabinet. His teaching spans undergraduate to executive education, emphasizing practical skills and professional ethics. Current research explores adaptive learning techniques, group assessment effectiveness, and the global evolution of accounting education.
His publications include seminal works on threshold concepts in accounting education and co-authorship of a leading MBA textbook. Ongoing projects investigate the impact of international standards and the role of technology in assessment integrity.
