Dr. Phil Hahn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology and Nematology at the University of Florida. His research focuses on plant-herbivore interactions, particularly the ecology and evolution of plant defense mechanisms against insects, spatial variation in these interactions, and insect community dynamics. He investigates these themes in natural, managed, and agricultural systems to advance ecological understanding through research, teaching, and outreach. His work addresses questions about how herbivore behavior, plant defense strategies, and environmental factors shape ecological communities.
Dr. Hahn’s laboratory is located at 2109 Steinmetz Hall, Building 970 Natural Area Drive, Gainesville, FL. He can be contacted via email at hahnp@ufl.edu or through his lab website plant-herbivore-interactions.net.
Research interests include:
- Evolution of plant defense against insects
- Spatial and temporal variation in plant-herbivore relationships
- Insect community ecology and behavior
- Biological control agent efficacy
- Climate and land-use impacts on herbivore-plant dynamics
Recent publications highlight studies on induced plant defenses, co-blooming plant diversity effects, and large-scale ecological experiments. His work integrates field observations, controlled experiments, and meta-analyses to address both basic ecological theory and applied conservation challenges.
