Petros Sofronis is the James W. Bayne Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He has held academic positions since 1991, including roles as Director of the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER) from 2010 to 2023. His education includes a Ph.D. in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from UIUC (1987), an M.S. from the same department (1983), and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristoteleion University of Greece (1980).
His research focuses on solid mechanics, micromechanics, and fracture mechanics, particularly hydrogen embrittlement in structural materials. He collaborates with institutions like Sandia National Laboratories to develop predictive models for hydrogen-induced failures and explores material microstructures resistant to hydrogen degradation. His work has significant implications for ensuring safe transportation of hydrogen via existing pipelines.
Teaching awards include the 2009 Campus Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and repeated recognition by UIUC students for course instruction. He has taught advanced courses such as TAM 551/552 (Solid Mechanics I/II) and ME 590 seminars. His professional affiliations include memberships in TMS, ASME, and the American Academy of Mechanics.
