Marie Agathe Charpagne

Dr. Marie Agathe Charpagne is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She joined UIUC in Fall 2021 after completing 5 years of postdoctoral research at the University of California Santa Barbara under Tresa Pollock. Her work combines experimental and computational approaches to metallurgical challenges in additive manufacturing.

Dr. Charpagne's research focuses on designing metastable alloys for extreme environments through additive manufacturing, with applications in aerospace, bio-compatible implants, nuclear energy systems, and hydrogen storage. Her group develops heterostructured materials, explores grain boundary engineering, and investigates radiation-resistant alloys through dynamic transformations.

Her recent publications demonstrate expertise in dislocation dynamics, plastic localization, and high-entropy alloy design. She has secured multiple prestigious awards including NSF CAREER (2023), ACS PRF (2023), and TMS Early Career Fellow (2025).

The Charpagne group maintains a friendly research environment with hands-on experience in alloy synthesis (DED AM, arc-melting), advanced microscopy (SEM/FIB/TEM/AFM), and mechanical characterization. Current funding sources include NSF, DOE, Sandia National Laboratories, and ARPA-E.
