Dr. Petri Nummi is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki. He serves as a supervisor for doctoral programmes in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources and Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on boreal wetland ecology, waterbird conservation, and ecosystem engineering by beavers.
- Senior Lecturer, Department of Forest Sciences (Current)
- Docent, Department of Forest Sciences
- Supervisor, Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources
- Supervisor, Doctoral Programme in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences
Research Interests: Nummi's work examines long-term environmental changes in boreal ecosystems, including chemical responses of lakes to atmospheric drivers, duckling nutrition dynamics, and the role of ephemeral wetlands in forest biodiversity. He integrates remote sensing with fieldwork and explores art-science collaborations for public engagement.
Scientific Contributions: His recent publications highlight human impacts on waterbird populations, predation risk mitigation, and sustainable management of wetlands. The 2025 studies underscore habitat restoration and climate change adaptation in boreal regions.
- NOVA course on Wetland Ecology and Management Prize (2018)
Academic Leadership: Nummi leads projects like "Kausikosteikot sorsien elinympäristönä" and participates in international collaborations, including the WATBRO project. He has reviewed over 47 manuscripts and conducted public outreach on climate change through media appearances and invited talks.
