معرفی
Kristiina Karhu is an Associate Professor at the Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Soils and Climate Change research group. She supervises the Doctoral Programme in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences and the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources.
- Research focus on ecosystem processes, soil carbon dynamics, and climate-smart forest management.
- Key collaborations include projects with the Academy of Finland, Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation, and the European Commission.
Her research explores forest-soil interactions under global change, with emphasis on microbial ecology, nitrogen cycling, and carbon sequestration. Recent projects compare continuous cover forestry and rotation management impacts on soil carbon storage in boreal forests, while others address climate adaptation in East African landscapes.
Scientific contributions include datasets on soil carbon degradability and participation in international conferences. She supervises doctoral and master’s students, including Subin Kalu, and collaborates across multidisciplinary teams in the Helsinki metropolitan area and beyond.
- Active in projects: PROFI (2023–2028), UNCAP (2018–2023), TAITASMART (2018–2022).
- Funding sources: Academy of Finland, Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation, European Commission.
Her work bridges forest ecology, soil biogeochemistry, and climate policy, with fieldwork in boreal and subtropical ecosystems.
