Her work examines forest floor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microbial degradation of organic matter, and the long-term effects of wildfires on soil carbon storage. She also investigates biochar applications in nutrient-poor boreal forests and water table manipulation impacts on peatlands.
Current research trends in her publications include fire chronosequence analysis, permafrost carbon release, and climate feedback mechanisms in boreal ecosystems. Her projects frequently involve collaborations with the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) and international teams studying Arctic and subarctic environments.
Dr. Aaltonen serves as supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources, contributing to advanced research training in environmental science.
