Petra Ulmanen is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social Work, Stockholm University, specializing in social care, social policy, and gender studies. Her research focuses on long-term care for older adults, informal caregiving, and the impact of policy changes on family caregivers. She is affiliated with the Care Research Group, studying aging, disability, and long-term care within social welfare contexts.
Her research includes three ongoing projects: exploring family members' managerial roles in care services, de-institutionalization of Swedish eldercare, and enabling aging in place. She teaches in bachelor’s and master’s programs, including international courses like 'The Swedish Model,' and supervises doctoral students.
Ulmanen’s work bridges theory and practice, addressing how welfare policies shape caregiving dynamics. Recent studies highlight caregiver stress during the pandemic, unpaid labor in nursing homes, and socioeconomic disparities in caregiving impacts. She advocates for policy reforms to support working caregivers and improve eldercare coordination.
