Petra Menz is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at Simon Fraser University (SFU), within the Faculty of Science. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics (SFU, 2015), B.Ed. in Mathematics and Computing Sciences (UBC, 1996), M.Sc. in Mathematics (UBC, 1994), and B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computing Sciences (University of Toronto, 1992). Her research focuses on embodied cognition in mathematics, particularly how gestures and diagrams facilitate mathematical thinking, and how undergraduate students are enculturated into mathematics through sensory engagement. She has taught a wide range of courses, including FAN X99, MATH 100, MATH 150/151/152/251, MATH 157/158, MATH 160, and MATH 190 at SFU, and contributed to Open Educational Resources (OER) for calculus courses.
Her work bridges mathematics education and cognitive science, emphasizing the role of kinesthetic and haptic interactions in mathematical ideation. She has published on reflective writing in teacher education, online metacognitive activities, and the design of university math help centers. Menz is active in curriculum development, including co-authoring calculus textbooks and clicker question banks for numerical analysis. She also contributes to SFU's Undergraduate Advising and Support programs, emphasizing student well-being and academic success.
