Dr. Amanda D. Watson is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Graduate Program Chair at Simon Fraser University's Sociology & Anthropology department. She holds a PhD in Feminist and Gender Studies from the University of Ottawa, an MSW from Carleton University, and a BA in Sociology from the University of British Columbia.
Her research focuses on care labor, social reproduction, affect theory, disability, climate anxiety, and kinship. Current projects include the 'Imagine Kin Project' exploring young adults' future relational dynamics amid crises, 'Politics of Social Justice Parenting' analyzing parenting during emergencies, and 'Politics of Birthstrike' examining ethical family choices in climate contexts. She is also an Associate Member of the Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies Department.
Dr. Watson has received the 2023 Cormack Teaching Award and 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award for online education. Her work bridges academic research with public engagement, appearing in media outlets like CBC, The Guardian, and The New York Times. She teaches courses on Canadian societal power dynamics, global capitalism, and social justice parenting.
Her publications include Resisting Orders: Catholic Sisters Contest Their Church (2025) and The Juggling Mother: Coming Undone in the Age of Anxiety (2020), alongside influential journal articles and edited volumes. Her research emphasizes maternal labor, climate anxiety, and intersectional feminist frameworks.
