Dr. Petra Janning serves as Project Group Leader in the Department of Chemical Biology at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology (Dortmund), directing the Mass Spectrometry Group which operates three core facilities: Low-Resolution Mass Spectrometry, High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry, and Proteomics services.
Her research spans Chemical Biology and advanced mass spectrometry techniques with primary focus areas:
- Structural elucidation of low molecular weight compounds
- Proteome-wide protein identification and quantification
- Target engagement studies of bioactive compounds
- Thermal Proteome Profiling for drug target identification
- Analysis of protein-protein interactions and post-translational modifications
Recent publication trends demonstrate specialization in thermal profiling methodologies for small molecule target engagement, particularly through Thermal Proteome Profiling (TPP) applications in drug discovery. The Mass Spectrometry Group provides critical infrastructure for synthesis validation, intact protein analysis, and complex proteomics workflows including SILAC, TMT-label, and label-free quantification approaches.
Her group maintains comprehensive service capabilities including nano-HPLC/ESI-MS/MS instrumentation for target identification via pulldown assays, cellular thermal shift experiments, and hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry.
