Petra Ahrens is an Academy Research Fellow at Tampere University's Unit of Social Research (Faculty of Social Sciences). Her current project focuses on gender-sensitive parliaments in Finland, Germany, and Poland, combining comparative methodology, norm diffusion theories, and intersectional analysis. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2014) and has held roles including Assistant Professor at Humboldt-Universität, Guest Professor at the University of Antwerp and Free University Berlin, and Senior Researcher in the ERC-funded EUGenDem project.
Research interests include gender policies, political representation, EU institutions, civil society organizations, and gender mainstreaming. She has edited journals like the European Journal of Politics and Gender and Femina Politica, and serves as co-chair of the ECPR Standing Group Politics & Gender. Her work bridges academia and policy, with consulting roles for Berlin’s government, EIGE, and the Agency for Gender Equality.
Awards include the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Postdoc Fellowship (EU Horizon 2020) and a doctoral scholarship from Evangelisches Studienwerk Villigst. Her publications span 2016–2021, addressing EU gender policy evolution, parliamentary dynamics, and populist party strategies. Research focuses on institutional structures, transnational civil society engagement, and gender equality implementation in complex political systems.
