Sabine Lang is a Professor of International and European Studies at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington, where she also holds the Jean Monnet Chair (2021–2024). She is an Adjunct Professor in Political Science, Germanics, and the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Her research focuses on gender equality in European politics, civil society advocacy, and institutional dynamics. She previously directed the Center for West European Studies and the European Union Center (a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence) from 2016 to 2024.
Lang earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from the Free University Berlin (1997) and has held research and teaching positions at the Universities of Leipzig and Free University Berlin before joining UW in 2002 as a DAAD Professor. Her work bridges comparative politics and gender studies, examining gendered political representation, EU policy processes, and transnational advocacy networks.
Her recent research emphasizes gender equality in Germany during the Merkel era and EU-level public engagement strategies. Key publications include Leading from Behind: Gender Equality in Germany During the Merkel Era (Routledge, 2023) and Party Politics and the Implementation of Gender Quotas (Springer, 2023). She co-edits femina politica, the leading German-language journal on women and politics.
