Dr. Petia Bobadova is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences at Appalachian State University's College of Arts and Sciences, where she has been employed since 2021. Prior to this, she served as Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor at Rockhurst University (2008-2021), and held various research associate positions at Emory University, Louisiana State University, and Central Michigan University.
Dr. Bobadova earned her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Sofia University in Bulgaria in 2000, with a thesis on "Reactivity of Molecules in Hydrogen Bonding: Computational Study of Hydrogen-Bonded Complexes of Carbonyl and Nitrile Compounds." She also holds an M.Sc. in Condensed Matter Physics from the same institution (1988-1993).
Her research focuses on computational chemistry and molecular engineering, particularly the photophysical properties of fluorescent dyes. Dr. Bobadova's work aims to design materials with medical and industrial applications through computer modeling. She examines structural modifications of BODIPY molecules to enhance their stability, solubility, and photophysical properties for applications as biological labels, imaging agents, ion sensors, and sensitizers for photodynamic therapy of cancers.
Dr. Bobadova's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on computational analysis of BODIPY dyes and related fluorophores. Her work spans molecular synthesis, photophysical characterization, computational modeling, and biological applications. The research shows progression from fundamental molecular properties to increasingly complex applications in bioimaging and photodynamic therapy.

Dr. Bobadova actively mentors undergraduate research students, with several former students pursuing graduate studies or professional careers in chemistry. She maintains a productive collaboration with Prof. M. Graca H. Vicente from Louisiana State University and holds an active National Science Foundation grant that supports student research and conference travel.
Her research group operates within the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences at Appalachian State University, utilizing computational resources to advance the understanding and application of fluorescent dyes.
