Peter Wimberger is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Puget Sound, where he also serves as Director of the Puget Sound Natural History Museum. His research focuses on evolutionary and conservation biology, including studies on ice worm ecology in glacial ecosystems and the impact of human activities on hummingbird evolution. He utilizes museum collections to document environmental changes over time.
His research interests include patterns of evolution, molecular phylogenetics, phylogeography, and conservation applications. Current projects examine ice worm adaptations to glacial environments and the evolutionary consequences of human-provided resources on bird populations.
Dr. Wimberger teaches courses in Evolution and the Diversity of Life, and contributes to the Environmental Policy and Decision Making program. He leads extensive science outreach initiatives through the museum, including volunteer docent programs and K-12 educational curricula focused on natural history specimens.
