Peter Hodum is a Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies & Sciences at the University of Puget Sound (on leave 2025-2026). His research focuses on avian ecology, conservation biology, and the impacts of anthropogenic threats like marine plastic debris, habitat loss, and introduced species on seabird populations. He co-founded a long-term community-based conservation program in Chile’s Juan Fernández Islands and Isla Mocha, addressing threats to island ecosystems through ecological restoration and community engagement.
Education: BA, Bowdoin College (1988); PhD, University of California, Davis (1999).
Research interests include seabird population dynamics (e.g., Rhinoceros Auklets, Tufted Puffins), marine plastic debris as an ecological indicator, and invasive species impacts. He collaborates with the Puget Sound Museum of Natural History and directs Chile Programs for Oikonos, a nonprofit advancing conservation in multiple regions.
Awards: 2011 Fulbright grant to Chile for teaching and research on seabird conservation.
Teaching: Courses include Conservation Biology, Ornithology, and Environmental Policy. He mentors students in fieldwork, data analysis, and applied conservation projects in Washington and Chile.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with Oikonos, Puget Sound Museum, and international institutions on seabird ecology, plastic pollution, and island restoration.
