Peter Wilkin is a Reader in Communications, Media & Cultural Studies at Brunel University, affiliated with the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences. His academic career began at Southampton University, where he completed his PhD in Politics and International Relations in 1994, and he has been at Brunel since 2005.
Research Interests: Wilkin’s work spans Political Economy, World-Systems Analysis, Media Studies, and Anarchist Social Thought, focusing on geocultural conflicts, digital activism, and critiques of neoliberalism. His recent research explores the intersection of free speech debates (e.g., Charlie Hebdo, WikiLeaks) with global power structures and the ideological role of geoculture in 21st-century conflicts.
Teaching: He convenes modules such as Global Sociology and Global Communication: The Digital Revolution, reflecting his expertise in global political dynamics and media’s role in societal change.
Publications: His scholarship includes analyses of populism, healthcare reforms in post-Ebola Sierra Leone, and critiques of illiberal democracy in Hungary. He is set to publish Till Debt us do part (Bloomsbury Press, 2027) and Murder Incorporated (AK Press, 2027).
Collaborations and Impact: Wilkin serves as a referee for journals including Third World Quarterly and Review of International Studies. He is associated with the Brunel University Energy Institute and the Resource Efficient Future Cities thematic group, emphasizing interdisciplinary engagement with social and political challenges.
