Peter West is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at Northeastern University London, specializing in the history of philosophy with a focus on Early Modern Philosophy and the History of Analytic Philosophy. His research emphasizes expanding the philosophical canon to include marginalized voices, particularly women thinkers. He leads two funded projects: 'New Digital Methods for Understanding the Impact of Early Women Writers on the Development of Science and Philosophy' and 'Women at the Dawn of Analytic Philosophy,' funded by the British Academy.
West holds a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (2015–2020), an MSc from the University of Edinburgh (2013–2014), and a BA from the University of Leeds (2010–2013). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and previously an Associate Fellow (AFHEA). His work combines academic rigor with public engagement, addressing topics like environmental ethics, digital humanities, and the role of philosophy in public discourse.
His research interests center on recovering overlooked contributions of women philosophers such as Margaret Cavendish, Susan Stebbing, and Dorothy Emmet. He explores themes like the nature of philosophical theories, the relationship between philosophy and science, and metaphilosophical questions about disciplinary boundaries. His publications appear in journals like Journal for the History of Philosophy, Oxford Studies in Early Modern Philosophy, and HOPOS, alongside public-facing articles in Aeon and The Conversation.
West teaches courses on Early Modern Philosophy and Advanced Ethics. His public engagement work addresses contemporary issues like environmental ethics, digital technology, and the societal role of philosophy, reflecting his commitment to bridging academic and public intellectual spheres.
